2003 ford escape review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Best in its class. introductionthe ford escape is one of the best of the small, affordable suvs, assuming that off-road travel isn't a priority. It accelerates briskly when equipped with the optional v6 engine. Folding down the rear seats reveals a flat, moderately sized cargo area. Best of all, its price is relatively low.  the escape was an all-new vehicle in 2001. For 2003, all models have upgraded interior materials for better appearance and feel. The seat fabrics, floor mats and door trim are of higher quality and are available in new patterns and hues. The center stack, door bezels and window switches are painted for a two-tone interior effect, and the window switches are illuminated for nighttime convenience.  for 2003, ford has added an up-market limited trim level, and a limited-edition option package called midnight.  . lineupfor 2003, ford has expanded the escape model lineup from two trim levels to three. Xlt begins at $22,335 with 2wd and at $23,960 with 4wd. New for 2003 is the limited, at $25,460 with 2wd and $26,910 with 4wd.  the base xls comes with a high level of standard equipment that includes air conditioning, illuminated remote entry, power windows and mirrors, a tilt steering column, center console, 15-inch steel wheels and an am/fm/cd/cassette audio system with a clock. Xls shifts gears with a standard five-speed manual transmission. For example, the xlt premium package 1230) includes leather seating surfaces, leather-wrapped steering wheel, a 60/40 split rear bench seat, front door map pockets, an overhead console with dual storage bins, a front passenger under-seat storage tray, and a power moonroof with sunshade.  new for 2003 is the xlt appearance package, which includes glossy dark shadow gray bumper fascias and side cladding, machined bright aluminum 16-inch wheels and dark shadow gray step bars.  also new is a limited edition xlt called midnight. The midnight escape features gloss black paint on fascias, body cladding and wheel-lip moldings. A unique black trim treatment and ebony nudo leather-trimmed seats complement the all-black exterior. Midnight comes loaded with side-impact air bags, a mach mp3 music system, and 16-inch bright, machined aluminum wheels with high-gloss black accents and silver center caps. Midnight options include side-step bars and a trailer-towing package. Ford designers worked to balance the confidence and ruggedness of a big suv with a sportier image of agility and fun. The escape's forward-poised stance, large wheel lips, wide body cladding and integrated bumper guard lend a functional appearance, while its short front and rear overhangs add to its sporting appeal. Outside door handles are easy to grab and feel like they're going to last.  accessories from ford outfitters include a snap-in pet barrier and a system to haul two mountain bikes in the cargo area. Bike racks can also be mounted on the roof; the standard roof rack with crossbars holds up to 100 pounds. We don't like the idea of compromising an suv's ground clearance with running boards, but ford claims that the running boards on the escape do not reduce ground clearance. They are designed to make it easier to lift kayaks, snowboards and other toys onto the roof rack. The rear bumper is also designed to aid roof access.  new for 2003 is an industry-first, dual-loading rack, which ford calls the no boundaries rack system. This provides two separate loading surfaces: a more traditional one on the roof and an additional one across the rear. When not in use, the sliding rails can be stored within the conventional roof portion of the rack system.  . interiorwith 133. 9 cubic feet of total interior volume, the escape is among the most spacious of the small suvs. Even with the split 60/40 rear seats set up to accommodate up to five passengers, escape still provides 33 cubic feet of cargo space.  escaping into or out of the front seats is made easier by low door sills and wide door openings. In the front-seat area, the escape is almost as roomy as ford's mid-size explorer. The rear seats offer good knee room.  ford has significantly upgraded the escape's interior for 2003. Both xls and xlt benefit from new interior fabrics and materials with improved quality and feel. There's also a new finish for center stack, and now the front-door power window and lock switches light up to make them easier to find. Side-impact airbags are standard on limited and midnight, optional 345) on xls and xlt.  white-faced instruments, in vogue these days, are set in a straightforward instrument panel. The audio system and heating, ventilation and air conditioning controls in the center stack are angled slightly toward the driver to ease reach while driving. Ford engineers say they tested the placement of the controls by using blindfolded occupants, but don't try that while driving.  . driving impressionsport-utility vehicles are not sports cars. In spite of that, california's twisting highway 1 is an enjoyable drive in the ford escape. Handling is relatively taut, without the mushiness that characterizes larger suvs with big off-road tires and long-travel suspensions. On muddy fire roads pocked with puddles and potholes, the escape is a blast. It's one of the best-handling suvs in this class, much better than a jeep liberty, better than a toyota rav4, quicker than a honda cr-v, but not as agile as a subaru forester.  steering is responsive. It feels direct and accurate with no dead spot in the center. There's enough feeling in the steering to impart a sense of control. Though this is not a sports car, the tires grip respectably in paved corners. When pushed beyond their limit, the front tires start slipping before the rear tires, just as with most front-wheel-drive sedans. This is called understeer, and it is intuitive and predictable. The escape provides surprisingly good transient response in a series of left-right-left corners. This permits quick, yet smooth, driving that will not upset passengers.  the v6 engine delivers good acceleration. While there's no such thing as too much power, it never feels lacking in the escape. The transmission shifts smoothly up and down, and chooses gears appropriately for the situation. The engine's broad power band never lugs or strains. This isn't the smoothest v6 on the market, nor is it the roughest. Abs comes into play just when expected and is detectable by the familiar pulsating sensation.  as mentioned, the escape handles well on gravel roads, but it is lacking in serious off-road situations. Its front-drive platform leaves it spinning its wheels on rough, loose, steep trails. The suspension does not have the articulation and travel needed for rugged terrain and there is no low-range set of gears. For serious off-road capability, look to the larger jeep liberty, the extreme jeep wrangler, or the luxurious and versatile land rover freelander. For everyday road travel, however, the ford escape is an excellent choice.  . summarythe ford escape is one of the best of the small, on-road suvs. The available v6 engine provides the escape with the most power in its class. A car-like ride makes it easy to live with. AM/FM✔ Power Windows✔ Anti-lock Brakes✔ Cruise Control✔ CD Changer✔ Leather Seats✔ Sunroof/Moonroof✔ Air Conditioning✔ Aluminum Wheels

2004 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. America's best-selling suv. introductionford explorer is the modern american station wagon. Ford sells more than 400,000 explorers a year, making it the best-selling suv and the sixth best-selling vehicle in america, and it's held these titles for a dozen years. Though quite capable as a tow vehicle and able to venture off the highway, most explorers, like most suvs, spend their entire lives shuttling people and performing the duties station wagons performed when baby boomers were growing up. The explorer answers this call admirably and comfortably, which is part of the reason it's so popular.  the explorer is roomy and comfortable. It's capable of seating seven people when equipped with the optional third-row seat that folds flat into the cargo floor when not being used. Part of the reason for this is that the explorer benefits from a superb five-speed automatic transmission.  safety features abound: anti-lock brakes come standard, and side-curtain air bags, designed to provide rollover protection, are optional and highly recommended. Ford's advancetrac electronic stability system is available for all xlt, eddie bauer, and limited models, providing improved traction and safety. The current model rides on a wider track and a longer wheelbase, giving it a more solid, more stable stance. Its newly developed independent rear suspension gives it a smoother ride and better handling than suvs with traditional live rear axles.  new car test drive chose the explorer as the best all-around sport-utility vehicle for 2003. An overhead-cam v8 800) is an option for all models except the xls. All models come standard with the five-speed automatic. Xlt comes with aluminum alloy wheels, a new chrome grille and black-grain outside door handles. Leather trimmed upholstery with a six-way power driver's seat is available for $655. Nbx includes a yakima loadwarrior roof rack, which features a cargo basket made of heavy-duty steel, two-tone bumpers, body cladding, wheel-lip moldings, step bars, front tow hooks, and 17-inch aluminum wheels with p245/65r17 all-terrain tires. The nbx interior is trimmed with unique seat fabric, special rubber floormats, and a soft liner for the cargo area with a storage bag.  eddie bauer 33,100) and limited 33,975) come with leather trimmed seating surfaces, automatic dual-zone climate control, 290-watt six-cd stereo with seven speakers, and wider tires. Six-way adjustable heated power seats with dual lumbar supports are used in front, and the driver's seat has a three-position memory feature. The top two explorer models differ in their distinctive trim: eddie bauer comes with arizona beige bumpers, moldings, lower bodyside cladding, 17-inch satin-nickel wheels and grille, and p245/65r17 all-terrain tires. Limited uses monochromatic bumpers, moldings and cladding with a chrome grille and unique 17-inch chrome wheels. The limited model is available in new ceramic white tri-coat.  options include third-row seating 670), auxiliary air conditioning 610), power-adjustable pedals 120), reverse sensing system 255), and a power moonroof 800). Located in the roof, it is designed to help protect first- and second-row outboard occupants during side-impact or rollover accidents. The safety canopy is designed to improve side-impact protection by staying inflated for a longer period. Ford has done a great deal of research on this technology and we strongly reco. walkaroundthe current ford explorer is the same length overall as the pre-2002 models, but it rides on a longer wheelbase (by 2 inches) and a wider track. Pushing the wheels out toward the corners makes the explorer more stable and more comfortable. Though ubiquitous, it is a handsome, good-looking vehicle. Front and rear fascia are smoothly integrated, while jeweled headlamps and tail lamps give it a sophisticated look. Yet, it clearly evokes the previous-generation explorer. No one will have trouble identifying it, and few will notice it at all. Uplevel models come standard with an illuminated keypad on the door for keyless entry. The keypad doesn't improve the appearance of the explorer, but it continues to be a popular feature among loyal owners. interiorthe explorer is a comfortable vehicle, even on long trips. Handsome pecan wood accents lend a luxurious appearance. Light-colored trim on the inside a-pillars and grab handles add to the light, airy atmosphere. It's a successful execution, though the mouse-fur roof liner is nothing to write home about. The leather-trimmed upholstery is attractive. However, we wish ford would have stitched leather all the way around to the inside edge of the seat bottom instead of using carpet there to save money.  the front seats are comfortable. They are wider and offer more fore-and-aft travel than before. We found the cloth seats in the xlt comfortable, firm, and supportive, with lots of adjustments. The same held true for the leather seats in the eddie bauer model.  seat heaters are part of the eddie bauer way of living. The buttons that control them are mounted in an awkward location, on the sides of seats. Reaching down to the side of the driver's seat, the left hand is confronted with an array of seat adjusters; finding and pressing the seat-heater button is a challenge. Likewise, it isn't always easy to find the seat-height adjuster. Rake is easy to adjust, and there's a knob on the up-level seats for cranking in some lumbar support.  adjustable pedals, a tilt steering wheel, and long seat travel help the explorer fit a wide variety of body types. Big coat hooks accommodate thick hangers and big loads of dry cleaning, something few manufacturers get right. Nicely designed cubbies with rubber mats provide space for wallet, sunglasses, a pen, cans, and bottles. A relatively large center console keep odds and ends in check. Interior door handles seem a bit awkward at first, but that.

2003 ford expedition review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new, smoother, more comfortable, more convenient. introductionford has launched an all-new expedition. This second-generation model shares almost nothing with last year's model. It's packed with new features, but the biggest improvement is its ride quality, a benefit of a new independent rear suspension.  when i last drove the expedition, it was for a long comparison test with one of its prime competitors. My fatigued co-tester was eager to trade vehicles with me. Indeed, keeping the giant sport utility, with its darty steering, sloppy suspension and rough ride, on the straight and narrow was tough duty. A driver could comfortably stay behind the wheel for the entire trip without fatigue, and the expedition would have a great shot at beating competitors in a comparison test. That's how much better the 2003 model is over its predecessor. Ride and handling are greatly improved, the steering is more responsive and more stable on the open road.  new features for the 2003 expedition include a power third-row seat that disappears with the press of a button, leaving a large, perfectly flat cargo area. The interior is all new. A small center seat on the second row slides forward to give front-seat parents access to a small child. Safety is enhanced with a lower front bumper, an optional safety curtain designed to protect occupants in a rollover, adjustable pedals, a tire-pressure monitor, and advanced electronics designed to help the driver maintain control.  the ford expedition and lincoln navigator full-size sport utilities were originally introduced as 1997 models for people who needed three rows of seats like a minivan but wanted to trade the soccer-mom image for the rugged, outdoorsy appearance of an suv. At that time, few competitors existed, primarily the chevrolet suburban and other full-size utilities from general motors. Toyota has since added the sequoia, and gm has launched additional iterations of its full-size and almost full-size sport utilities.  . lineupa choice of engines is offered in the expedition: the standard 4. 6-liter v8 rated at 232 horsepower and the 5. 4-liter v8 that produces 291 horsepower. The xlt is equipped well.  eddie bauer adds front captain's chairs with two tone-leather and 6-way driver power, automatic climate control with rear a/c, a premium sound system, arizona beige lower body side cladding, floor console, overhead console, 11 cup holders, fog lights, privacy glass with power flip-open rear windows, satin nickel grille, homelink, electrochromic mirror, power outside heated mirrors with memory, security approach lamps and integrated turn signals, power adjustable pedals with memory, power driver's seat with memory, reverse sensing system, black non-illuminated running boards.  expedition prices run a wide range: xlt 2wd 30,555); xlt 4wd 33,425); eddie bauer 2wd 37,050); eddie bauer 4wd 41,195). Numerous packages are available for the xlt. A fully loaded eddie bauer edition goes for nearly $45,000.  an fx4 off-road package 4,185) is available on xlt models that features distinctive exterior cues that give it a more rugged appearance, including tubular steel running boards, foglamps, an fx4 badge on the liftgate. Unique 17-inch chromed steel wheels and all-terrain tires complement special shocks tuned for off-road performance.  . walkaroundin spite of all the changes underneath, there is little to visually distinguish the new 2003 ford expedition over the 2002 model. A new expedition owner may be unhappy when the neighbors don't notice they've traded the old one in for the new model. Then again, maybe not. Auto companies have found it doesn't always pay to mess with winning formulas.  with roughly the same overall dimensions as before, the new expedition looks bigger and bolder than its predecessor. The track has been widened nearly two inches to give it a well-planted stance. The standard wheels increased to 17 inches for a bolder look. The roof height is lower. Bumpers are integrated more smoothly into the overall design. Previously, the expedition's interior was virtually identical to the lincoln navigator and the ford f-150 pickup trucks upon which they are based. In this new generation, however, distinctions have been made. The navigator is far fancier than the expedition, which, while quite refined, has a more outdoorsy, everyday workhorse ambiance.  the ford expedition's interior is dressed up with a metallic satin finish on such items as the rings that surround the vents and door handles. Shapes are round, and controls are hefty for an easy grip.  storage space is generous. The front center console available in some versions of the expedition can fit a small laptop computer. The console has a slot to hold pens and a palm pilot or other pdas. The lighter colors used for the upholstery give it a lighter, more car-like air.  the interior features a number of clever and useful innovations, some of them industry firsts. The third-row seat splits 60-40. Push a button on the wall of the cargo area, and one side powers down. Hold down the other button, and the other side powers down. The honda odyssey minivan introduced the fold-flat third-row seat, which is accomplished simply in a non high-tech fashion by pulling a couple of straps. The power-down buttons are more convenient. One side did not power up without a hand because the headrest didn't retract fully, creating too snug a fit against the second row seatback. We assume this has been addressed in production.  when folded down, the cargo floor is perfectly flat, in contrast to some expedition competitors who say the floor folds flat but actually slant. The flat floor combined with the flaps that cover the gap where the seats hinge make it easy to slide objects in and out. It proved invaluable during a variety of typical weekend chores. We changed the expedition repeatedly from a people hauler to a cargo hauler and back again with just a simple push of the button. After dumping that off, a pack of teenagers piled in to go to a punk rock concert. The third row is comfortable enough for a couple of full-size adults. The next day we picked up a high-backed wicker chair from the furniture store.  the second row features a clever feature ford claims is another industry first. The bench seat splits roughly into thirds. The middle section moves forward by about 11 inches, almost abutting it to the back of the front center console. That gives front-seat parents access to a small child or a child in a safety seat. The small center seatback can also be folded down and used as a work surface. The two outboard second-row seats fold easily forward for access to the third-row seat.  the expedition can be outfitted with enough safety equipment to create a cocoon inside in case of an accident. Dual-stage front airbags are standard. The expedition is now outfitted with an independent rear suspension. The suspension, combined with a stiffer chassis, gives the expedition dramatically improved ride and handling. It makes the expedition feel far smaller than the large vehicle it is.  ford introduced a similar independent suspension on the 2002 explorer, but it's more common to cars than trucks. The efficient packaging of the independent rear suspension made it possible for ford engineers to accomplish a fold-flat third-row seat.  yet, the expedition doesn't sacrifice its truck-like capabilities. It still carries heavy loads and tows trailers and boats with the best of them.  another major mechanical improvement to the expedition was the switch to the more car-like rack-and-pinion steering system. The change significantly improves steering response. The new expedition requires only small inputs to the steering wheel, to which it answers immediately.  . summarythe all-.
