2003 ford escape review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Best in its class. introductionthe ford escape is one of the best of the small, affordable suvs, assuming that off-road travel isn't a priority. It accelerates briskly when equipped with the optional v6 engine. Folding down the rear seats reveals a flat, moderately sized cargo area. Best of all, its price is relatively low.  the escape was an all-new vehicle in 2001. For 2003, all models have upgraded interior materials for better appearance and feel. The seat fabrics, floor mats and door trim are of higher quality and are available in new patterns and hues. The center stack, door bezels and window switches are painted for a two-tone interior effect, and the window switches are illuminated for nighttime convenience.  for 2003, ford has added an up-market limited trim level, and a limited-edition option package called midnight.  . lineupfor 2003, ford has expanded the escape model lineup from two trim levels to three. Xlt begins at $22,335 with 2wd and at $23,960 with 4wd. New for 2003 is the limited, at $25,460 with 2wd and $26,910 with 4wd.  the base xls comes with a high level of standard equipment that includes air conditioning, illuminated remote entry, power windows and mirrors, a tilt steering column, center console, 15-inch steel wheels and an am/fm/cd/cassette audio system with a clock. Xls shifts gears with a standard five-speed manual transmission. For example, the xlt premium package 1230) includes leather seating surfaces, leather-wrapped steering wheel, a 60/40 split rear bench seat, front door map pockets, an overhead console with dual storage bins, a front passenger under-seat storage tray, and a power moonroof with sunshade.  new for 2003 is the xlt appearance package, which includes glossy dark shadow gray bumper fascias and side cladding, machined bright aluminum 16-inch wheels and dark shadow gray step bars.  also new is a limited edition xlt called midnight. The midnight escape features gloss black paint on fascias, body cladding and wheel-lip moldings. A unique black trim treatment and ebony nudo leather-trimmed seats complement the all-black exterior. Midnight comes loaded with side-impact air bags, a mach mp3 music system, and 16-inch bright, machined aluminum wheels with high-gloss black accents and silver center caps. Midnight options include side-step bars and a trailer-towing package. Ford designers worked to balance the confidence and ruggedness of a big suv with a sportier image of agility and fun. The escape's forward-poised stance, large wheel lips, wide body cladding and integrated bumper guard lend a functional appearance, while its short front and rear overhangs add to its sporting appeal. Outside door handles are easy to grab and feel like they're going to last.  accessories from ford outfitters include a snap-in pet barrier and a system to haul two mountain bikes in the cargo area. Bike racks can also be mounted on the roof; the standard roof rack with crossbars holds up to 100 pounds. We don't like the idea of compromising an suv's ground clearance with running boards, but ford claims that the running boards on the escape do not reduce ground clearance. They are designed to make it easier to lift kayaks, snowboards and other toys onto the roof rack. The rear bumper is also designed to aid roof access.  new for 2003 is an industry-first, dual-loading rack, which ford calls the no boundaries rack system. This provides two separate loading surfaces: a more traditional one on the roof and an additional one across the rear. When not in use, the sliding rails can be stored within the conventional roof portion of the rack system.  . interiorwith 133. 9 cubic feet of total interior volume, the escape is among the most spacious of the small suvs. Even with the split 60/40 rear seats set up to accommodate up to five passengers, escape still provides 33 cubic feet of cargo space.  escaping into or out of the front seats is made easier by low door sills and wide door openings. In the front-seat area, the escape is almost as roomy as ford's mid-size explorer. The rear seats offer good knee room.  ford has significantly upgraded the escape's interior for 2003. Both xls and xlt benefit from new interior fabrics and materials with improved quality and feel. There's also a new finish for center stack, and now the front-door power window and lock switches light up to make them easier to find. Side-impact airbags are standard on limited and midnight, optional 345) on xls and xlt.  white-faced instruments, in vogue these days, are set in a straightforward instrument panel. The audio system and heating, ventilation and air conditioning controls in the center stack are angled slightly toward the driver to ease reach while driving. Ford engineers say they tested the placement of the controls by using blindfolded occupants, but don't try that while driving.  . driving impressionsport-utility vehicles are not sports cars. In spite of that, california's twisting highway 1 is an enjoyable drive in the ford escape. Handling is relatively taut, without the mushiness that characterizes larger suvs with big off-road tires and long-travel suspensions. On muddy fire roads pocked with puddles and potholes, the escape is a blast. It's one of the best-handling suvs in this class, much better than a jeep liberty, better than a toyota rav4, quicker than a honda cr-v, but not as agile as a subaru forester.  steering is responsive. It feels direct and accurate with no dead spot in the center. There's enough feeling in the steering to impart a sense of control. Though this is not a sports car, the tires grip respectably in paved corners. When pushed beyond their limit, the front tires start slipping before the rear tires, just as with most front-wheel-drive sedans. This is called understeer, and it is intuitive and predictable. The escape provides surprisingly good transient response in a series of left-right-left corners. This permits quick, yet smooth, driving that will not upset passengers.  the v6 engine delivers good acceleration. While there's no such thing as too much power, it never feels lacking in the escape. The transmission shifts smoothly up and down, and chooses gears appropriately for the situation. The engine's broad power band never lugs or strains. This isn't the smoothest v6 on the market, nor is it the roughest. Abs comes into play just when expected and is detectable by the familiar pulsating sensation.  as mentioned, the escape handles well on gravel roads, but it is lacking in serious off-road situations. Its front-drive platform leaves it spinning its wheels on rough, loose, steep trails. The suspension does not have the articulation and travel needed for rugged terrain and there is no low-range set of gears. For serious off-road capability, look to the larger jeep liberty, the extreme jeep wrangler, or the luxurious and versatile land rover freelander. For everyday road travel, however, the ford escape is an excellent choice.  . summarythe ford escape is one of the best of the small, on-road suvs. The available v6 engine provides the escape with the most power in its class. A car-like ride makes it easy to live with. AM/FM✔ Power Windows✔ Anti-lock Brakes✔ Cruise Control✔ CD Changer✔ Leather Seats✔ Sunroof/Moonroof✔ Air Conditioning✔ Aluminum Wheels

2004 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. America's best-selling suv. introductionford explorer is the modern american station wagon. Ford sells more than 400,000 explorers a year, making it the best-selling suv and the sixth best-selling vehicle in america, and it's held these titles for a dozen years. Though quite capable as a tow vehicle and able to venture off the highway, most explorers, like most suvs, spend their entire lives shuttling people and performing the duties station wagons performed when baby boomers were growing up. The explorer answers this call admirably and comfortably, which is part of the reason it's so popular.  the explorer is roomy and comfortable. It's capable of seating seven people when equipped with the optional third-row seat that folds flat into the cargo floor when not being used. Part of the reason for this is that the explorer benefits from a superb five-speed automatic transmission.  safety features abound: anti-lock brakes come standard, and side-curtain air bags, designed to provide rollover protection, are optional and highly recommended. Ford's advancetrac electronic stability system is available for all xlt, eddie bauer, and limited models, providing improved traction and safety. The current model rides on a wider track and a longer wheelbase, giving it a more solid, more stable stance. Its newly developed independent rear suspension gives it a smoother ride and better handling than suvs with traditional live rear axles.  new car test drive chose the explorer as the best all-around sport-utility vehicle for 2003. An overhead-cam v8 800) is an option for all models except the xls. All models come standard with the five-speed automatic. Xlt comes with aluminum alloy wheels, a new chrome grille and black-grain outside door handles. Leather trimmed upholstery with a six-way power driver's seat is available for $655. Nbx includes a yakima loadwarrior roof rack, which features a cargo basket made of heavy-duty steel, two-tone bumpers, body cladding, wheel-lip moldings, step bars, front tow hooks, and 17-inch aluminum wheels with p245/65r17 all-terrain tires. The nbx interior is trimmed with unique seat fabric, special rubber floormats, and a soft liner for the cargo area with a storage bag.  eddie bauer 33,100) and limited 33,975) come with leather trimmed seating surfaces, automatic dual-zone climate control, 290-watt six-cd stereo with seven speakers, and wider tires. Six-way adjustable heated power seats with dual lumbar supports are used in front, and the driver's seat has a three-position memory feature. The top two explorer models differ in their distinctive trim: eddie bauer comes with arizona beige bumpers, moldings, lower bodyside cladding, 17-inch satin-nickel wheels and grille, and p245/65r17 all-terrain tires. Limited uses monochromatic bumpers, moldings and cladding with a chrome grille and unique 17-inch chrome wheels. The limited model is available in new ceramic white tri-coat.  options include third-row seating 670), auxiliary air conditioning 610), power-adjustable pedals 120), reverse sensing system 255), and a power moonroof 800). Located in the roof, it is designed to help protect first- and second-row outboard occupants during side-impact or rollover accidents. The safety canopy is designed to improve side-impact protection by staying inflated for a longer period. Ford has done a great deal of research on this technology and we strongly reco. walkaroundthe current ford explorer is the same length overall as the pre-2002 models, but it rides on a longer wheelbase (by 2 inches) and a wider track. Pushing the wheels out toward the corners makes the explorer more stable and more comfortable. Though ubiquitous, it is a handsome, good-looking vehicle. Front and rear fascia are smoothly integrated, while jeweled headlamps and tail lamps give it a sophisticated look. Yet, it clearly evokes the previous-generation explorer. No one will have trouble identifying it, and few will notice it at all. Uplevel models come standard with an illuminated keypad on the door for keyless entry. The keypad doesn't improve the appearance of the explorer, but it continues to be a popular feature among loyal owners. interiorthe explorer is a comfortable vehicle, even on long trips. Handsome pecan wood accents lend a luxurious appearance. Light-colored trim on the inside a-pillars and grab handles add to the light, airy atmosphere. It's a successful execution, though the mouse-fur roof liner is nothing to write home about. The leather-trimmed upholstery is attractive. However, we wish ford would have stitched leather all the way around to the inside edge of the seat bottom instead of using carpet there to save money.  the front seats are comfortable. They are wider and offer more fore-and-aft travel than before. We found the cloth seats in the xlt comfortable, firm, and supportive, with lots of adjustments. The same held true for the leather seats in the eddie bauer model.  seat heaters are part of the eddie bauer way of living. The buttons that control them are mounted in an awkward location, on the sides of seats. Reaching down to the side of the driver's seat, the left hand is confronted with an array of seat adjusters; finding and pressing the seat-heater button is a challenge. Likewise, it isn't always easy to find the seat-height adjuster. Rake is easy to adjust, and there's a knob on the up-level seats for cranking in some lumbar support.  adjustable pedals, a tilt steering wheel, and long seat travel help the explorer fit a wide variety of body types. Big coat hooks accommodate thick hangers and big loads of dry cleaning, something few manufacturers get right. Nicely designed cubbies with rubber mats provide space for wallet, sunglasses, a pen, cans, and bottles. A relatively large center console keep odds and ends in check. Interior door handles seem a bit awkward at first, but that.

2000 ford mustang review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The first ponycar is still the dominant player. introductionford's mustang was completely redesigned and re-engineered last year (1999), with improvements to every single system under its brand-new skin. But all the best traits of the mustang, the original pony car, remain. There's plenty of torque. There are japanese and korean coupes that compete with mustang on price, but they don't offer pony car performance. lineuplike the gm pony cars, the ford mustang comes in many guises. There are v6 and v8 versions in both coupe and convertible body styles. There's also the cobra, a super-performance model (available as a coupe or convertible) that competes against the camaro ss and the firebird ram air. Mustang gt models come with a 4. 6-liter overhead-cam v8 that produces 260 horsepower. Both engines offer substantially more power this year. The limited-production svt cobra and cobra convertible models come with special 32-valve double overhead-cam engines.  prices for the mustang coupes: base 16,520), gt 21,015), cobra 27,605). Convertible prices: base 21,370), gt 25,270), cobra 31,605). walkaroundredesigned for 1999, mustang's design features chiseled lines that give it a muscular appearance. The original 1964 mustang influenced this design. The rear fender air intake is twice as long as the previous generation mustang, with sharp corners and much more pronounced lines. The rocker panels curve out, and the fenders have pronounced front and rear wheel well arches. This gives the car a racier stance than the previous model. The front features wraparound complex reflector headlamps with integrated side marker lamps, and a larger grille opening with a honeycomb grille texture and a chrome pony emblem reminiscent of the original 1964 car. A new tricolor front fender badge was added for 2000. The hood features a prominent (non-functional) hood scoop. The roof was changed last year to a new design with a sharp edge. The rear quarter windows have a new shape and the three-element tail lamps feature sharp corners. The three available wheel designs, 15-, 16- and 17-inch, each have flat-spoke designs to complement the sharp corners of the body shell.  the selection of goodyear, firestone and b. Goodrich tires remains the same as last year. All gt models get twin 3-inch diameter polished stainless steel exhaust tips. The gt gets a rear deck spoiler and front fog lamps as standard equipment.  the electrical system has been simplified with the addition of a single module that replaces the functions of a half-dozen single-function modules for wipers, chimes, illuminated entry system, one-touch-down windows, remote entry and the anti-theft system. interiorinside the car, there is no change for 2000 other than the addition of child seat anchors. The seat foam is much better than the previous-generation mustang. The seat tracks were redesigned to add 1 inch of additional rearward travel to better accommodate taller drivers, and seat belts have been attached to the seats to move with them. There's a six-way power driver's seat, along with fabrics and sew patterns in cloth and optional leather. Embossed ponies on the upper portions of the seat backrests give the interior a sporty, traditional mustang look. Medium graphite, medium parchment and midnight black are the standard interior colors. The instrument panel, the center console and the headliner are color-keyed in 2000 models.  the interior is nice and cozy in the coupe. There's enough seat track length to accommodate tall drivers and just enough elbowroom to keep from feeling cramped. The mustang's back seat is small, with only enough room for small objects or kids. The trunk is small with an even smaller opening. The split fold-down rear seat is handy for hauling cargo.  three new colors are offered for 2000. A 16-inch tire and wheel package is included in the v6 model appearance package. An 80-watt premium sound system comes standard on all models. A cd/radio combination, a cd/cassette system, and the mach 460 system are available as options. driving impressionperformance is what the mustang gt is about. Its 4. 6-liter sohc modular v8 engine produces 260 horsepower at 5000 rpm with 302 foot-pounds of torque at 4000 rpm. The engine features revised camshafts, intake manifold runners, and larger valves for improved airflow above 3000 rpm. A new coil-on-plug ignition system replaces the previous ignition system for higher energy spark. The gt engine sounds great, whether cruising or at full throttle.  power from the mustang's 3. 8-liter split-port v6 engine is up substantially as well. It has been increased from 150 horsepower to 190 horsepower at 5250 rpm, with 225 foot-pounds of torque at 3000 rpm.  all models, regardless of engine or transmission, get a 3. 27:1 rear axle ratio. Both transmissions shift smoothly. The flexibility of both the v8 and v6 engines make good mates for the transmissions, which feature sufficient strength to take high-rpm shifts for the life of the car. The 4-speed automatic transmission has been recalibrated for smoother upshifts. The 5-speed tremec manual transmissions are carried over from 1999, with the v6 using the t-5 and the v8 using the t-45. The bosch system works at all speeds to reduce wheelspin. Whenever wheelspin is detected, the system retards ignition timing, cuts fuel flow, and activates the brakes at one or both drive wheels, in that order. This car involves the driver. Most of the raw edges and choppiness of the mustang's old suspension behavior have been smoothed out. Engineers retuned the rear suspension for improved compliance by increasing suspension travel. This reduces ride harshness. The gt has linear-rate springs, up in front to 450 pounds per inch. At the rear, the old springs were swapped out in favor of 210 pound per inch linear-rate springs. These decrease the mustang's ride stiffness and improve steering feel and response.  the steering is more direct and more positive than pre-1999 mustangs. A revised boost curve gives the steering more linear response and better on-center feel. The turning circle has been reduced by 3 feet through changes to the steering rack, the lower control arms and front stabilizer bars.  the braking system was re-engineered for 1999, with new aluminum twin-piston front calipers reduce front unsprung weight by a significant 10 pounds. The new calipers also contribute to greatly improved brake pedal feel. A new master cylinder design improves the ratio of brake pedal travel to brake force and improves pedal modulation. Abs is still optional for 2000 and must be ordered to get the traction control system. summarythe camaro and firebird are slightly more powerful than the mustang gt. The mustang gt is also less expensive than either of the gm pony cars by several thousand dollars. Both the camaro and firebird are slated for extinction in the near future, which will leave the mustang as the sole pony car. But even now, the mustang gt remains the best all-around pony car. model lineupcoupe: base 16,520), gt 21,015), cobra 27,605); convertible: base 21,370), gt 25,270), cobra 31,605). assembled indearborn, michigan. options as testedmach 460 sound system 395); sport front bucket seats with leather seating surfaces 500); traction control 230); dual illuminated visor vanity mirrors 95); convenience group 550) includes front floor mats, cruise control, electric rear window defroster, six-way power driver's seat. model testedmustang gt 21,015).
